Sol Lewitt
I recently heard this podcast by a Piece of Work (Writing on the wall episode) about the artist Sol Lewitt. He sounds fascinating, in that he made community work by providing instructions for making a painting. The question then relates to whose work is it, the artists or the community who painted it? One of his Sentences on Conceptual Art, states that "the artist's will is secondary to the process he initiates from idea to completion. His wilfulness may only be ego." Therefore process is paramount and in allowing others to complete his pieces he is letting them go through the process of making, and letting the ego of the artist off the hook. He is also passing on the making of his art to further generations.
